Who will be the next DGP of UP ?

Amid talks of the current UP DGP OP Singh getting an extension for a couple of months the search of a new face to lead one of the largest state police force has also begun.

Sources say the state has forwarded names of seven senior IPS officers to the centre. The decision has to come before the present DGP retires on January 31. The names that have been included in the panel have at least one-and-half-year or more of services period remaining. Sources say the strongest contender is Anand Kumar who has held posts of ADG (law and order) and DG Jail and his performance was rated very high and is said to be first choice of the CM too.

Seniority wise the list have names of 1985 batch IPS and director in vigilance department Hitesh Chandra Awasthi, next is Sujanvir Singh the 1986 batch IPS who has his service left till 2021. Apart from these two IPS of 1987 batch RP Singh, who is at present DG EoW. Singh shall retire in February 2023. Also Vishwajeet Mahapatra and GL Meena the IPS officer of 1987 batch.

Anand Kumar Rajkumar Vishwakarma of 1988 batch , who have their services still left for about three-years are also in the list. Now the ball is in the court of the central government to select the next DGP for Uttar Pradesh. The news that OP Singh can get extension for three-months is still doing the rounds and the chief minister might give his consent on Singh’s extension.

OP Singh had made extensive efforts to implement police commissioner system in the state and the officer has all the credits for implementing the change in policing system despite bureaucrats were not in favour to implement this change in the policing system.
