Will women electors make a difference in UP’s political cauldron

Jubilee News Desk

Uttar Pradesh’s political cauldron has started brewing with the approaching assembly election and political pundits have started putting up theories.

As Congress general secretary recently in her UP visit stated her party shall give 40% ticket to women candidates it is significant to look at current and past data regarding women in elections. The present assembly has 44 female MLAs with maximum 37 from the BJP that had fielded maximum women candidates in 2017 elections.

Past statistics reveal that between 2002 and 2017, over 700 women contested assembly elections in the state and 137 won – with a success rate of 19.21%. IN the four Lok Sabha elections after 2000, 153 women have contested in Uttar Pradesh and 45 won — a success rate of 29.41%.

With the announcement of 40% tickets in a 403 seat assembly and the ‘Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon’ campaign Priyanka has pinned hope on women power but other parties though wil certainly have women candidate are yet to open their strategy for giving tickets to women candidates.

The election-wise data, says in the 2017 assembly election, 151 women contested and 42 won. In 2012, there were 224 women contestants and 43 won. In 2007, in all 25 out of the 154 women contesting women won, and in 2002, 184 women contested and 31 won.
BJP that has maximum women representatives in the assembly at present is expected to make the decision keeping in view the results from the previous election.

There are different theories floating upon TV screens and social media promulgated by those interested in such theories. BJP’s over 300 seats at present has made the ruling party to establish they will win again while key opposition Samajwadi Party plans to increase its vote share not just for the assembly polls but for the forthcoming lok sabha that is slated in 2024.

Caste equations have been a integral part of the Uttar Pradesh elections but two things that have made themselves significant are past two government getting full majority and newcomers who won elections.

State had past three governments of Bahujan Samajwadi Party, Samajwadi Party and the present BJP and all had full majority.
While the ruling party focuses upon development projects and booth level workers the opposition is getting united too. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav met AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Dilip Pandey and other party leaders too.

Amid caste equations in the state the assembly poll results have a significant indicator. If we look to the data from 1977, the share of first-time MLAs has never been lower than 65%. So does this means apart from caste equations the parties need to put the face equation too – by bringing new faces on the dais.
