Violence in Lakhimpur gets political focus

After death of eight people including four farmers and a journalist in Lakhimpur Khiri, politicians and farmer leaders have been trying to reach Lakhimpur Khiri district while state government has imposed section 144 to restrict movement.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called the incident unfortunate and assured strict action against the accused.

Leaders such as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been stopped from reaching the spot. These and many other leaders have been trying to reach Lakhimpur Khiri since late on Sunday night.

Akhilesh demanded immediate treatment for injured and resignation from the chief minister. A case has been filed against Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son and several others over Sunday’s violence. Eight people were killed after violence over a visit by Mishra and UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Maurya.

Farmers had assembled to stop the visit of the Union Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Maurya, and the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri district started after a car reportedly in one of the convoy mowed down the protesters. This followed violence in the area. Farmers are demanding action in the incident and compensation.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav resorted to sit-in outside his home after he was not allowed to leave home to visit Lakhimpur Kheri district. A truck and other vehicles were parked on road in such a manner that no vehicle passes through his house towards Lakhimpur Khiri.

BSP’s Satish Chandra Mishra too was stopped from leaving Lucknow for Lakhimpur Khiri. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been detained on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Kumar Lallu has said that a judicial probe must take place into the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

In a tweet West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has said a Trinamool party Delegation will visit victims’ families.
