In a fresh bid a US Secretary Bob Menendez have told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to ask the Indian government for a ‘swift reversal’ of the newly placed Citizenship Act as well as the National Register of Citizens as it violates the human rights of the citizens of India.
In his letter to Pompeo he even talked about the Kashmir’s situation after the abrogation of Article 370 and problems that followed.
Senator Bob Menendez is a senior member of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee and has been vocal on US President Donald Trumps impeachment trial. Expressing his concern he demanded a ‘swift reversal’ of the CAA and the potential for the establishment of a nationwide NRC in the country.
“I urge the administration that the US must remain in defending democratic values, freedoms and human rights “I urge the administrations to engage the Indian government at the highest levels and concerns, press for a swift reversal of these people and practices, and ensure protection of the huan rights of all persons in India regardless of their religion.”
Act disturbs the democratic value
“Despite the governments claims that the Citizenship Bill seeks to protect minorities, its failure to include Muslim groups facing persecution in neighboring countries, such as Pakistan’s Ahmadiya and Burma’s Rohingya, signal an anti-Muslim intent,” the letter reads.
Menendez has been concerned about the people that were injured during the protests and deaths of peaceful demonstrators present at the CAA protests nationwide. The Citizenship Amendment act proposes to protect religious minorities that includes members of Hindu, Sikh, Busshist, Jain, Parsi and Christan communities how have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, following religious prosecution will get an Indian citizenship.
Issue with Assam and Kashmir
The governments efforts in Assam has left effectively 1.9 milion persons, primarily Bengali-speaking Muslims, stateless. The government appear now to be extending this effort across the country,” said Menendez.
He pointed out the five-month internet shutdown and abrogation of Article 370 A in Kashmir and the problems that followed.
“The situation in Kashmir has also normalize since the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August. The five-month Internet shutdown in Kashmir is the longest ever in a democracy, and has left people ‘s lives, jobs, and the economy in a more dire situation.”
However, the Indian government has now been questioned by the Supreme Court to review its move on internet shutdown and curbs on movement in Jammu and Kashmir under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) after the government abrogated Article 370 and broke the state into two Union territories on August 5. To this the government has defended its action saying that it was to prevent Pakistan from creating tension in the region through proxies and terrorist attacks.
