Uttar Pradesh’s Hastinapur will turn in to an iconic archaeological site, announced the finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman in her Budget speech on Saturday.
She said that in the country five archaeological sites will be developed as “iconic” sites with museums. And the sites identified for the initiative are Raki Garhi in Haryana, Hastinapur in UttarPradesh, ShivSagar in Assam, Dholavira in Gujarat, and Adichanaluru in Tamil Nadu.
An archaeological site is a place in which evidence of past activity is preserved and which has been, or may be, investigated using the discipline of archaeology. Varanasi already has a archeological site museum at Sarnath where many of the excavated items are kept for visitors to see and read their details via text or audio.
Each site on this list can include more than just the well-known monuments, temples or citadels, the surrounding area or complexescan be just as important.
Hastinapur is situated on the right bank of an old bed of the Ganga in Meerut district and is portrayed as the capital of the Kuru Kingdom of Kauravas in Mahabharata. Many incidents in the epic, Mahabharata were set in the city of Hastinapur. According to the Mahabharata, the 100 Kaurava brothers were in this city to their mother, Gandhari.
On the bank of the Budhi Ganga, two places, the Draupadi Ghat and Karna Ghat remind of Mahabharata notables. A first reference to Hastinapur in the Puranas appears as capital of Emperor Bharat.
