UP’s election gets underway from the west

The 403 seats assembly election in Uttar Pradesh kicked off with 58-assembly constituencies going to poll Thursday in the western part of India’s largest state.

According to the update from the election commission by 9 am 7.93% votes were polled including 7.53% in Agra, 8.26% in Aligarh, 8.33% in Gautam Budha Nagar, 8.30% in Mathura, 7.50% in Mujaffarnagar, 7.70% in Shamli, 8.44% in Meerut.

As voting started Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Free country from fear. Come out and vote.” Voters started coming to polling centres since morning despite cold weather. As the temperature started to rise the queue at many polling stations became longer. Covid protocol was followed at the pooling centres.

No irregularities were reported according to the state election commission. A total 623 candidates are in the fray and about 2.27 crore voters will decide who gets which of the 58 MLAs chairs. In all 11 districts are under the first phase polling.

The Jat dominated seats are particularly under focus.The ruling BJP is expected to face a stiff challenge from the Samajwadi Party (SP)-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance.

The impact of farmers’ stir shall also play a role in the polling. IN all 9 ministers are also in the fray — Shrikant Sharma, Suresh Rana, Atul Garg, Chaudhary Laxmi Narain, Sandeep Singh, Anil Sharma, Kapil Dev Agarwal, Dinesh Khatik, Dr G S Dharmesh.

The districts where the elections are being held are Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Shamli, Hapur, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Mathura and Agra. In the 2017 polls, the BJP had bagged 53 of these 58 seats.

UP has a seven phase election with counting on March 10. Who shall form the new government will be announced as counting gets over.
