The matter of poor quality PPE kits purchased by the Uttar Pradesh Medical Supply Corporation Limited (UPMSCL) hasn’t yet gone over and a new scam is making news. The responsible officials in the corporation aren’t worried of making such expenditure during the crisis.
The latest one is of purchase made for poor quality masks. The chief medical officer of Hapur district had one April 22 written a letter to the head of the UPMSCL stating the triple layer masks are not of adequate quality. It was stated that the masks are of such a quality that even the strings used to tie them on face broke away during usage. The quality of cloth too is poor.
The question also when the purchase was made @Rs19. As per the information with Jubilee Post the mask was purchased @Rs19 while the centre has on 21 March, 2020 had decided Rs 10 and then on 24 March decided Rs 16 as maximum price. When the retail price is maximum Rs 16 then whole sale price should have been even less.
As per the information from the districts the masks have been purchases @Rs 6.50 to Rs 7 and are better than the masks purchased by the corporation. The corporation has sent about 3000 masks in small districts. If the difference in price is considered the corporation has made a loss of revenue of lakhs of rupees to the state exchequer.
When in the time of crisis saving on expenditure is the motto all across the country and state it will be interesting to see whether the officials responsible for such a waste of money are made accountable or left free like it happened in the past.
