UP election phase IV: 59 seats 624 candidates

  •  15% women candidates in the election fray

Polling has started in one of the most significant segment of the Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday with 624 candidates in the fray upon 59 seats in 9 districts. Till 9 am Uttar Pradesh had 9.10% turnout with a maximum 10.62% turnout in Pilibhit district.

This phase has all the 9 seats of the state capital going to poll and the state minister Ashutosh Tandon is contesting from Lucknow East constituency while sitting BJP MLA Dr Neeraj Bora is from Lucknow North. Dr Bora is facing Pooja Shukla, the woman who came to light after showing black flag to CM Yogi’s cavalcade.

Fourth phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly election-2022 has 167 candidates with criminal case, 231 are crorepatis and 9 others are illiterates. IN all 91 (15%) female candidates are contesting assembly election in the coming phase, according to an analysis done by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Details from the 621 candidates in the election fray in fourth phase was shared by ADR on the basis of the affidavits filed by candidates with the election commission during their nomination.

“Out of 621 candidates analyzed, 27% or 167 have declared criminal cases against themselves which is higher than first two phases where a maximum 25% candidates, had criminal cases. There are 624 candidates in the fray and we analysed 621 as documents of three others were not clear,” said Sanjay Singh.

“Among major parties, 31 (53%) out of 58 candidates analysed from Congress, 30 (53%) out of 57 candidates analysed from SP, 26 (44%) out of 59 candidates analysed from BSP, 23 (40%) out of 57 candidates analysed from BJP and 11 (24%) out of 45 candidates analysed from AAP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits,” said Santosh Srivastava co-coordinator of the ADR.

IN all 22 (38%) out of 58 candidates analysed from Congress, 22 (39%) out of 57 candidates from SP, 22 (37%) out of 59 candidates from BSP, 17 (30%) out of 57 candidates from BJP and 9 (20%) out of 45 candidates from AAP have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Crorepati candidates

Of the 621 candidates, 231 (37%) are crorepatis, according to the ADR office bearers. “The role of money power in our elections is evident from the fact that all major political parties give tickets to wealthy candidates,” said Singh.

Among the major parties 50 (88%) out of 57 candidates analysed from BJP, 48(84%) out of 57 candidates analysed from SP, 44 (75%) out of 59 candidates analysed from BSP, 28 (48%) out of 58 candidates analysed from Congress and 16 (36%) out of 45 candidates analysed from AAP have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.

There are 75 (12%) candidates with value of assets of 5 crores and above, 88 (14%) candidates with assets between 2 crores and 5 crores, 145 (23%) candidates with assets between 50 lakhs to 2 crores, 167 (127%) candidates with assets between 10 lakhs and 50 lakhs and 146 (24%) candidates with assets less than 10 lakhs.

“Average of assets per candidate contesting in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2022 fourth phase is Rs 2.46 Crores,” said Singh.
