Two delta plus cases in Uttar Pradesh

Present of Delta plus variant of the covid-19 virus in Uttar Pradesh has alerted the health department. These cases have been reported (one each) from Gorakhpur and Deoria districts.

Amit Mohan Prasad, additional chief secretary health department gave details of the cases in a press conference Wednesday and said the cases were detected via genome sequencing that was being done in the state randomly among cases testing positive for covid.

Samples of these patients were sent for genome sequencing. They tested positive for delta plus variant of covid, Prasad told media.

One of the case is of a 23 year doctor of the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur district who tested positive on May 23. Her sample was picked up randomly and sent for genome sequencing which tested positive for the delta variant.
India has recorded at least 56 cases of the Delta Plus variant across 12 states till June 30. The central government last month declared the ‘Delta Plus’ variant of the virus causing Covid-19 as a variant of concern.

The other cases is of is a 66 year man from Deoria. He also tested positive and was admitted from to hospital. His sample sent for genome sequencing also tested positive for Delta plus variant of covid. The man died on May 29.
Maharashtra, with 20 cases of Delta Plus variant. There are 14 centres in India to identify Delta Plus variant and all of them are under the central government. They are being conducted as per the ICMR guidelines.
