Trump visit: Deals are yet under the wraps

Jubilee News Desk

LUCKNOW: On his first visit to India next week, US president Donald Trump shall get welcomed by a crowd of “10 million” in the city of Ahemdabad that recorded a total population of a little over 5.5 million in 2011 census and it is estimated to be around 8.6 million.

But why is Trump in India? September 2019, at a rock-concert-like rally at a Houston football stadium, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump walked hand-in-hand, looking like brothers-in-arms.

In India Trump and Modi might repeat a similar exercise but not without a reason. And the reason is political. The votes of Indians settled in America. About the trade deals too there are chinwags.

While US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, piloting the trade deals negotiations, is not in Trump’s delegation, commerce secretary Wilbur Ross is coming. A Memorandum of Understanding on intellectual property protection is a thing to watch.

Trump has in his first election had mentioned before the voters his plans to keep America first and had even stated he wants to keep jobs going out of America, (outsources jobs such as BPO) in America for Americans.

For Trump, an announcement on a trade package is, depends upon how India prepares. And the recent budget promoting ‘Make in India’ along with the increased tariffs on some imports may not be the perfect situation to strike bilateral deals. What happens is a matter of a day away.

Dwight D Eisenhower, was the first US president to visit India, and was greeted with a 21-gun salute when he landed in Delhi, in December 1959. The 39th US president Jimmy Carter also visited in 1978. He had addressed a joint session of parliament, went to the Taj Mahal, and dropped by a village just outside Delhi.

The village, Chuma Kheragaon, had a personal connection as Carter’s mother, Lillian, had visited here when she was in India as a member of the Peace Corps in late 1960s. Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in their trip, they gave the village its first television set. It was even renamed “Carterpuri” now falls in Haryana, (close to Delhi) about 6 kilometres off the main Gurgaon road.
