The 2020 Olympic Games that was slated to begin from Friday 24 July and was supposed to end by 9 August 2020 may be postponed by one year because of coronavirus.
There is no official announcement on this but it might come soon as japan’s PM said it has to be postponed. Australia and Canada have already denied participation in the Japan Olympics. It came after chairman of the British Olympic Association said Great Britain would be unlikely to send a team to Tokyo.
On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided, says the International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound. The parameters have not been determined, but Games are not going to start on 24 July, he says.
This is first such happening with Olympic games. Though they had been cancelled thrice in 1916 due to world war, and in 1940 and 1944 due to second world war that Olympics were not conducted.
International Olympic Committee has given four weeks to take a call on the future of this summer’s games, but veteran IOC member Pound says a decision will be announced earlier.
Canada and Australia had already announced their decision to withdraw from this summer’s Games when the chairman of the British Olympic Association, Hugh Robertson, said he expected Britain to join.
Coronavirus has effected 3.70 lakh people across the world and over 16000 have lost their lives. IN japan over 1700 people have been effected including some Olympic officials.
Sunday, Canada was the first major country to withdraw from this summer’s Olympics and Paralympics.
