Sadhvi Padmavati’s 24th day of hunger strike to protect the Ganges

In Haridwar, 22-year-old Sadhvi Padmavati, a follower of the Matri Sadan is on an indefinite hunger strike demanding on the enactment of Ganga River. Earlier in the Matri Sadan two saints have sacrificed their lives to protect Ganga. January 6 is the 24th day of the fasting of sadhvi padmavati.

Head of Matri Sadan Swami Shivanand Saraswati said that when the prohibition of mining in the Ganges and tributaries from Raiwala to Bhogpur has been stated in writing, then how mining was started in Shyampur. The central government has pledged its promise. The central government should enact the Ganga Act soon. In addition, the proposed four hydropower projects in Uttarakhand to be canceled immediately.

In Matri Sadan, two saints have sacrificed their lives while fasting to protect Ganga. In the year 2011, Brahmachari Nigamanand fasted for the demand to stop illegal mining in the Gange. Later he died. In the year 2018, well-known scientist Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand alias GD Agarwal also sacrificed his life on hunger strike to protect Ganga.

These are the six main demands of the Sadhvi

  •  Dams under construction and proposed on Ganga should be canceled.
  •  According to the study of IIT’s experts, 50 percent flow in the Ganges should be continued continuously.
  •  All orders issued by the NMCG regarding mining in the Ganges and allied rivers should be followed.
  •  If there is an ordinance to save the Ganga, it should be brought immediately so that the interference of the politicians and corrupt officials in the Ganga case is stopped.
  • Form the Ganga Act and elaborate discussion on it, like-minded institutions including the Matri Sadan should be included.
  •  SSP Senthil Abuir Krishnaraj of Haridwar should be suspended immediately.
