Braving cold, at times minus 4-degree Celsius, kilometres of walk and above all round-the-clock threat perception, Indian students in Ukraine are trying to get back home. Some belong to Uttar Pradesh.
Even as exercise to evacuate students and Indian nationals has begun social media gets flooded with Ukraine-Russia war so are pictures and videos of students getting viral. Sitting inside bunkers for days, without access to basic facilities and food for long these students, majority doing MBBS in different universities in Ukraine are passing hours in wake to get back home.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted a video of a Lucknow based girl Garima Mishra who is stuck in Kyiv, Ukraine. “@narendramodi ji , @DrSJaishankar ji. Videos coming from Ukraine are very disturbing. For God’s sake do whatever it takes to bring these children back to India. The entire nation is with these students and their families,” Priyanka wrote in the tweet and requested the PM and government to bring back students in Ukraine.
“We have reached Romania border and now awaiting to cross border. But we are waiting here since long and there is no information,” Akhil Kumar Mall Vishen a student from Uttar Pradesh said.
Some students have walked up to 40-kilometres to get to the border but are waiting permission to enter Romania and finally reach a flight to get back to India. There are sounds of blasts around.
Parents are in touch with their wards via whats app calling. “We are speaking to them when ever possible. We hope things get better for a safe passage for all students,” said Girjesh Srivastava, father of Geetika, a medical student in Ukraine.
During the day the temperature is around 2 to 3 degree Celsius while at evening and night it goes sub-zero. “Often the temperature in border areas is around minus 10 degree Celsius,” said Akhil another student. Uncertainty over talks between two nations is further giving tension.
