Rains killed nine, bring life to halt in state capital

Nine people were reportedly killed and at least two injured after a boundary wall collapsed following incessant rains in Lucknow while life came to a grinding halt with waterlogging in several parts of the state capital on Friday morning.

 

District administration decided to call  it a holiday at educational institutions up to class 12 and also asked heads of private offices to decide for a holiday with their own discretion. Helpline number were issued while divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob and district magistrate SP Gangwar went out to survey areas with major problems.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to family of the deceased.

Indian Meteorological Department in its forecast has informed for light rain and cloudy sky on Friday. Hospitals including the primary health centres and community health centres were put on alert and all trauma units have also been asked to remain on alert, by the district administration.

Hospitals have been asked to prepare staff, medicine and equipment for treatment of people who may come with injuries. People in distress may call integrated command centre 0522-4523000 for help.

People woke up to rains and waterlogging and those who went out for morning walk despite rains were compelled to return back soon as roads were filled with water. Many of them shared pictures and posted videos on social media platforms telling others not to step out if there is no emergency.

It rained in Lucknow on Thursday almost for the entire day and also during the intervening night. In the morning there was rain and it did no stopped before 9 am.
