Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi will contest in the Punjab assembly election from two seats – Chamkaur Sahib, Bhadaur.
In another significant development in the Punjab election the Congress has denied ticket to Angad Singh, the sitting MLA from Nawashahr or Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Angad is the husband of Aditi Singh, the Congress MLA who left the party and joined BJP to contest election from Rae Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, where elections are being held simultaneously with Punjab.

Apart from his traditional seat of Chamkaur Sahib, the Congress has decided to field CM Charanjit Singh Channi from Barnala’s Bhadaur seat in the upcoming Punjab Assembly election. The Congress party has declared list its third and final candidates.Punjab will vote for electing 117 MLAs on February 29.

Channi’s name comes on two seats – Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar district and Bhadaur in Barnala district — both of which are reserved assembly constituencies. Channi will file his nomination papers Monday.

Interestingly, the Congress party’s candidate from Bhadaur – Joginder Singh – came in third after AAP’s Pirmal Singh Dhaula and Akali Dal’s Sant Balvir Singh Ghunas in the 2017 Punjab Assembly election.

First elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 2007, Channi has represented the Chamkaur Sahib seat ever since. He has also served as a minister in the Captain Amarinder Singh government and the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly between 2015 and 2016.

Punjab CM was appointed as Punjab’s first-ever Dalit chief minister in September last year following the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh. As per the list of candidates declared by Congress, it has been decided to field Tarsem Singh Sialka from Attari, Sukhpal Singh Bhullar from Khem Karan, Satbir Singh Saini Balichiki from Nawan Shahr, Ishwarjot Singh Cheema from Ludhiana South, Mohan Singh Phalianwala from Jalalabad.
