As medical education minister reached for inspecting medical facilities complaints galore in front of him right from the OPD to the trauma centre where he went to take stock of the services.
“You have not performed your duty and are arguing over it. People like you defame the hospital,” the medical education minister Suresh Khanna was seen scolding one of the medical staff at the emergency medicine department at the KGMU on Saturday.
King George’s Medical University is a 100 years old institution and has the credit of having maximum hospital beds (over 4500) in Asia but during the inspection the minister was surrounded by patients and attendants complaining.
Doctors were virtually speechless when the attendants made complaints in front of the minister and them. The attendants openly said they are asked to bring medicine from outside stores and also demanded money for services.
“My wife’s lungs are damaged and I am spending money every day. Doctors told me nothing can be done,” said Pradip, husband of Sushma Gupta, who is admitted at trauma centre. Lack of communication and lack of attention has troubled patients here.
The vice chancellor Prof MLB Bhat with a fleet of senior doctors Dr BK Ojha, Dr Avinash Agrawal and Dr SN Sankhwar kept following the minister but none could give a correct replry to the issues raised by the patients and attendants. The doctors kept on noting the phone number of complainants to resolve the issues later.
Attendants told how difficult it is to get treatment under the BPL category as processing takes a long time. The minister asked two patients to send application for financial assistance from the state government.
