Preparing for water, fighting over air

Special Desk

The world was preparing to fight over water and all international campaigns were focused upon saving water for future. But 2021 has seen fight over pure air rich in oxygen.

The pictures of people with oxygen cylinders and long queue over the filling stations have raised one big question.

Could we not see the wave coming? The question is simple in the light of what WHO had been saying and warning the world and Uttar Pradesh in India was no exception to the possible wave.

UP got the first wave peak in September-October 2020 and there was time to meet the challenges of the second wave.

Learnings from the first wave were much talked about among the medical fraternity that got back to work with non-covid facilities keeping some covid protocol at workplace.

Days passed and so weeks and months. Then came the warning for a second wave again and it was stated ‘be prepared.’

But why could we not prepared ourselves well before the storm, if we knew it was coming and was there only. Not even during the lull before the storm.

Apparently we thought we had enough to fight from the first wave learnings. This was partly true as doctors were in the know-how of the things. But what about the infrastructure.

China during the first wave only constructed big buildings with ample beds to support and care for the ones getting infected. We saw videos but deleted from the whats app groups to see another one.

Lucknow the state capital is struggling to make make-shift covid facilities, add ICU beds, put up more ventilators and arrange oxygen.

Decisions have been taken quickly to do all that but decisions will see the light of the day in the days to come, not hours. And patients are adding up every hour.

As the fight goes on number of patients is swelling faster than new beds being added to existing and also to new covid facilities.

Over 7000 beds are there and 2000 more to come up in the next 10-days. Will that be sufficient?

The apocalypse like situation has a big question still unanswered. Could we have seen the second wave?
