Oxygen crisis, hospitals make distress call to family

Jubilee News Desk

Oxygen crisis hit hard the cvodi and non-covid hospitals across Lucknow on Wednesday and so much that a few of them had to shift admitted serious covid patients elsewhere.

“KGMU is helping other institutions also apart from treating patients. We shifted patients from TS Mishra Medical College and Mayo Medical Centre.

IN all 8 of those shifted required ventilator. After oxygen crisis came up we supplied 70 jumbo cylinders to TS Mishra and 10 to Mayo medical centre”, said Dr Sudhir Singh, the media spokesperson for KGMU on Wednesday.

Oxygen crisis started in the state capital since the number of new patients crossed 5000 mark and beds made available for covid patients were occupied fully.

Since patients on ventilator and high flow nasal cannula needs more oxygen hence the consumption of stock is more.

The problem came as the supply of oxygen remained as usual but the demand went up considerably. At present over 55000 active cases are there in the state capital and many are admitted to hospitals.

There are around 4000 covid patients admitted in different hospitals in Lucknow.

On Tuesday night and Wednesday morning attendants got calls from different hospitals that oxygen stock had finished and there was no alternative source for the medical gas hence they may take their patients elsewhere.

Attendants rushed to the hospital and also looked for options but getting the admission done is in itself tough where to find an alternative hospital for a covid patient.

Also as many patients are on ventilator support and high flow nasal cannula that requires higher oxygen flow shifting a patient is practically tough.

The Mayo Medical centre had put up the notice, saying after repeated requests to the CM and central government we are unable to get enough oxygen supply.

Hence we are requesting family members of patients on oxygen support, to take their patients to higher centre for further management. An obvious fear tourbled the attendants who gathered at the hospital.

Some other hospitals too had put up similar notices. Makewell hospital also put up a notice in the evening. As oxygen stock is almost finished we have requested attendants to shift their patients, said Nishant of the hospital.
