Oli reappointed as Nepal’s PM

IN a second another political twist in neighbouring Nepal within a week president Bidya Devi Bhandari has reappointed KP Sharma Oli, as the Prime Minister.

KP Sharma Oli, in his capacity as leader of the largest political party in Nepal’s Parliament, was reappointed as Prime Minister as opposition riddled by factionalism, failed to secure majority seats in the House to form a new government.

Sharma in the House on Monday had gone for a confidence motion and secured votes in his favour from 93 lawmakers and in against from 124 lawmakers. IN all only 232 members of 271 were present in the House to cast their vote in the confidence motion. Special arrangements were made by the Parliament for Covid-19 positive MPs to vote.

Oli faced a confidence vote after alliance partner NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) withdrew support. Oli asked parliament for a vote of confidence to show he still has enough support to stay in power but he could not gather support enough to continue government.
The Office of President in a press statement said that President Bhandari reappointed Oli as Prime Minister in his capacity as leader of the largest political party in the House of Representatives as per Article 78(3) of the Constitution of Nepal.

After he takes oath again Oli will be require to prove that he has majority support in the House within 30 days.

Oli’s appointment came shortly after office of the President said that no two parties or more than two parties came to lay claim to forming coalition government by the given deadline. Oli will take a vote of confidence at the House within 30 days. At present 136 votes are needed to form a majority government. JSP has 32 seats in the House.
