A few days before debate had started over appointment of a Muslim professor in the department of Sanskrit at the Banaras Hindu University and students had come on roads over the issue. The students were demanding that Prof Firoz Khan be removed from the department and a new person be appointed.
Compelled the BHU administration had to remove Khan from the Sanskrit department but he was given appointment in the department of arts faculty. This episode was not even out of the memory of people and a new issue came up from Karnataka’s Gadag district.

The Lingayat Math in Karnataka has broken an age old tradition. The math has decided to appoint a Muslim youth as its priest. Dewan Shareif Mullah, 33, was appointed the next pontiff by Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami of the math, located in Astuti village of the district.
Shareif’s father had given 2 acre of land
It is said that Shareif will take oath as priest on February 26. The math is attached to 350-year old Koraneshwar Sansthan math of the Khajuri village in Kalburgi. Shreif’s father had donated 2 acre of land to the math several years ago. Will a Muslim man becoming priest be opposed or not?
On being made the priest Shreif said that he was impressed by the teachings of the reformer of 21stcentury Vasvanna since childhood. He said he would work with the idea of social justice. Lingayat math gives significance to social harmony over the religion.
The math is in support
Priest of the Khajuri math Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami said that we bring people close irrespective of their religion or caste. Vasvanna has given importance to social justice and harmony and following his teachings the math has opened doors for every one. Math has supported Shreif becoming the priest.
