Mumbai attack mastermind gets 5-year jail

Hafiz Saeed the Mumbai attack mastermind has been sentenced and fined by a Pakistan anti-terrorism court in two terror-financing cases. The Jamat-ud-Dawa chief will serve two sentences of five and a half years each and will have to pay two tranches of Rs 15,000 as fine.

It may be noted that pakistan’s anti-terrorism court (ATC) had kept the judgement reserved on February 6. Saeed has 29 cases of terror funding, money laundering, and illegal acquisition against him. earlier the court had accepted the petition of Saeed that all six cases be heard together and judgement be given.

The Dawn, of Pakistan reported that deputy prosecutor general Abdul Rauf Wattoo told that six cases were pending against Saeed and in four of them the evidences were being submitted. Hearing in the four cases will be completed this week.

An official of the court said that ATC judge took note of the Saeed’s petition where he had asked to merge the cases including the ones for terror funding and then give the judgement. The deputy public prosecutor opposed this petition of Saeed and said that two cases are completed and the court may pronounce the judgement.

Saeed’s accomplices Hafiz Abdul Salam Bin Mohammad, Mohammad Ashraf and Professor Jafar Iqbal were also arrested under the anti-terror law 1997. From the government’s side Mufti Abdur Rauf kept the points and also presented the witnesses. According to him 23 witnesses in all were presented and their statements recorded. According to Wattoo the accused Saeed had been collecting funds illegally in the garb of charity for terrorists.
