Minister Chetan Chauhan passed away

Lucknow: Cabinet minister in Uttar Pradesh government and former cricketer Chetan Chauhan died on Sunday at Medanta hospital in Gurugram. He was admitted to PGI in Lucknow after he tested positive for COVID-19 and was later shifted to Medanta hospital after his condition became serious.

He is the second minister in the state to have died of COVID-19, the earlier being Kamal Rani Varun, who had died at the PGI on August 2. She was admitted there after she tested positive.

73-year-old Chauhan had made 2084 runs in 40 test matches and was the first cricketer to have made 2000 runs without making a century (1969-1981). Chauhan with Sunil Gavaskar played together and made 3127 runs with an average of 54.85 in 60 test matches. They made 11 century partnerships of which 10 were for the opening pair.

Chauhan contested elections in 1991 from Amroha on BJP ticket and became an MP. He was given ticket again in 1996 but could not make it. He was reelected MP in 1998. He was an MLA from Naugawan assembly constituency in Amroha and was minister for homeguard.

Uttar Pradesh has reported over 1.54 lakh COVID-19 cases and 2449 deaths. Number of recovered patients crossed 1 lakh mark. Several minister have been infected with COVID-19 till now in state.
