Kerala: Governor Arif Mohammad Khan showed anguish over Kerala governments decision to implement Citizenship Act saying it is a violation of protocol after the assembly went to Supreme Court for it on Thursday.

The Kerala assembly has reached the Supreme Court to hold special one-day meeting to pass the Citizenship Amendment Act for which the governor said how can they reach the supreme court without consulting the governor in the state as a ‘common courtesy’.

‘I will look into whether the state government can go to the Supreme Court without the approval of the Governor. I am not just a rubber stamp’.

Khan said he didn’t knew about the matter until he read it in the newspapers, ‘I have no information about this going on in the Supreme Court, but if so, he should have informed me first. I came to know about this though newspapers’.

To this CPM member S Ramchandran Pillai suggested that Khan should read the constitution first.

‘This statement of Khan is a violation of democratic and constitutional provisions. The state government is empowered to approach SC and there is no need to get his approval. I appeal to him is that he should read the Constitution, study the precedents and act on the basis of that’.

Kerala has become the first state to challenge the amended citizenship law after the governor filed suit in the Supreme Court to declare the controversial amendment unconstitutional.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vujyan had earlier accused the BJP government of using an RSS agenda in order to divide the nation on communal lines by passing this Act. ‘I want to clear that no detention centres will be built in Kerala as we have a long history secularism. Greeks Romans Arabs everyone reached our land. Christians and Muslims reached Kerala in the very beginning. Our religion is of inclusiveness. We need to keep our traditions alive’, he added.
