Indian students evacuated from Ukraine to take FMGE exam

Special Desk

Indian medical students evacuated from Ukraine can take the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and then undergo compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI), the government has decided.

FMGE allows students to practice medicine in India.

A large number of Indian students in medical institutes of Ukraine, who were in different years of MBBS had to be evacuated following or Russia-Ukraine war. Their future was in lurch without practical training or a degree and permission to work in India.

Now as they take the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination and do internship for their practical training they can practice. This has come as a great relaxation for students whose education was affected, especially those who were enrolled in China, Ukraine, and the Philippines.

Foreign medical graduates are also required to do compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) for a period of two years, said NMC in the official notice. The relaxation is for those students who have completed their course on or before June 30 and have got certificate of completion of the course. This is one time arrangement.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) in its notice said, Indian students who were in the last year of their undergraduate medicine course and have subsequently completed their studies as also have been granted a certificate of completion of the course/degree by their respective institute, on or before June 30, 2022, shall be permitted to appear in FMG exam.

As per the rules foreign medical graduates will be eligible to get registration only after completing the CRMI for two years. The relaxation granted to the foreign medical students is a ‘one-time measure’ and should not be treated as precedence in the future, said NMC.

In all 20672 Indian students are enrolled in different medical colleges and universities in Ukraine, all of which are providing online classes to them. Over 1400 students are from Uttar Pradesh.
