With 97894 news cases the number of active cases in India cross 1 million mark. With 51,18,253 infections, India is the world’s second-worst affected country, and trails only the United States, which has a caseload of around 6,828,301.
While Brazil which is on number three in the world has 4,421,686 cases far below from India. Russia that is leading in vaccine trials has 1,079,519 cases. For the first time, the number of active cases in the country have crossed the 10-lakh mark.
In the 24-hour period, India reported 1,132 deaths linked to the virus, taking the total number of fatalities to 83,198. The country becomes third in fatalities after the US and Brazil. India reported a record daily jump of 97,894 coronavirus infections in 24 hours, taking its tally past the 51-lakh mark, according to the union health ministry data on Thursday.
Maharashtra remains the worst affected state by the pandemic with a tally of over 10.7 lakh cases. More than 37% of cumulative deaths reported so far in the country are from the western state.
While Maharashtra has 2,97,506 active cases, the highest in the country, Karnataka with 1,01,645 cases, Uttar Pradesh (67002), Andhra Pradesh (90,279) and Delhi (30,914) are on the list. Delhi reported its highest single-day spike on Wednesday as 4,473 fresh cases were reported in the national capital. Delhi’s COVID-19 tally now stands at 2.30 lakh.
It took India just 230 days to reach the grim milestone. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5.
Worldwide, almost 3 crore people have been infected by SARS-CoV-2, and more than 9.23 lakh people have lost their lives to the pandemic since it surfaced in China late last year.
