India extends lockdown till May 3

Lucknow: The day when lockdown period, imposed since March 25, was coming to end Prime Minister Narandra Modi announced its extension till May 3. Some states had urged to extend lockdown while a few had already extended it till April 30.

Modi on Tuesday morning announced extension of nationwide lockdown till May 3 in order to fight the spread of coronavirus. It has so far claimed 339 lives in the country and left over 10,000 infected. The PM however mentioned that since lockdown was imposed at an early stage the impact of the virus has not created havoc in the country.

Now the relaxation points. The PM announced that till April 20, every state, district, town and police station area will be closely monitored. This monitoring will be done on the parameters of how effecting they have been in abiding by the lockdown provisions. Have any new hotspots added to the district and how people behave.

Those states which will not let hotspots increase, could allow some important activities restart, but not without conditions, said PM. He further said that if people do not follow the guidelines in their areas stricter lockdown may be reinforced. Guidelines on implementation of the new lockdown will be announced by Wednesday.

PM thanked the people for facing hardships during the ongoing lockdown. A day before PM had consultations with Chief Ministers through video-conferencing, during which talks were held over the need for extending the lockdown.

During the meeting, Modi had said that there seems to be a consensus amongst the states on the extension of lockdown.
