Pakistan’s present political crisis has something different from the past. The prime minister called for early election and wants opposition to accept it but the opposition is saying their bid to move no-confidence for PM has been foiled unconstitutionally.
Also, while in the past governments got displaces and army was said to be behind it this time the army is staying away from what is going on.
Pakistan’s president has dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan. This as the deputy speaker declared the motion for a no-confidence vote against Khan unconstitutional and part of a plot by foreign powers to interfere in Pakistan’s democracy.
The opposition, which was hoping to unseat prime minister Khan, has cried foul. Opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari says they will petition the Supreme Court against the move. The opposition thought it had the votes to remove Khan after several political allies and members of his party switched sides.
The opposition says what has effectively happened in Pakistan is Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has replaced the will of the parliament with the whim of the speaker. Pakistani PM Khan has urged opposition parties to accept his call for new elections rather than being part of a foreign conspiracy for regime change. But what is that foreign conspiracy and who all are behind it is not what the former cricketer explained.
“They have been crying hoarse about how our government has failed and lost support of the people so why the fear of elections now? Democrats go to the people for support,” Imran Khan said in a tweet.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court will hear arguments related to the president’s shock dissolution of parliament a statement from the body has announced. The fate of Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan is now with the decision that the Pakistan Supreme Court shall take after hearing.
The court adjourned for the day, after hearing the first set of arguments challenging the President’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly.
To sum up the entire developments in the past few days in Pakistan, the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan’s government in Pakistan was rejected in the National Assembly on Sunday. Following this, the leader had the Parliament dissolved and announced fresh elections.
While the Opposition has challenged the move in the Supreme Court, Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has begun preparations for the upcoming polls. Meanwhile, with the dissolution of the National Assembly, Imran Khan has been de-notified as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Imran Khan was removed from the Prime Minister’s Office of Pakistan, a statement from the cabinet secretary said. “Consequent upon the dissolution of Pakistan Assembly by the President of Pakistan in terms of Article 58(1) read with Article 48(1) of the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan vide Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, dated 3rd April 2022, Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi ceased to hold the office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, with immediate effect,” the government statement said.
Imran Khan, who outsmarted the opposition to avoid a no-confidence motion, has proposed former Chief Justice (retd) Gulzar Ahmed as caretaker Prime Minister. The decision was taken after consultations with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) core committee, reports said.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Hussain took to Twitter to declare that Imran Khan has nominated former Pakistan Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed for the post of caretaker prime minister.
