Lucknow. ICICI Lombard General Insurance, one of the leading private general insurance
providers has unveiled a shocking and vide spread Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) fraud in Uttar Pradesh. In the wake of these alarming findings, the company has taken decisive action by urging for an intervention by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate and unearth the extensive network of fraudulent claims, amounting to crores of rupees.
The entire investigation began in 2015, with the lodging of FIR by the Special Investigation Team
(SIT), which was constituted by the Hon'ble High Court Lucknow Bench. The primary purpose of the SIT was to delve into suspected Motor Third-party claims filed before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunals across Uttar Pradesh. More than 100 FIRs were filed by the SIT all over the state, leading to the apprehension and subsequent imprisonment of the guilty parties. This landmark move gained further backing when the Supreme Court not only upheld the constitution of the SIT but also advised other High Courts to adopt a similar approach.
One of the key cases that caught the attention of ICICI Lombard General Insurance, concerned an FIR registered as case crime no. 200/2016, naming Ikrar as the driver, Chaman as the cleaner, Rizwan as the insured party, Manoj Kumar as an advocate for the claimants, and others. This case centred around a driver and vehicle implant scheme, where the driver and cleaner claimed leg amputation due to an accident. However, subsequent inquiry by the SIT revealed that the amputation had occurred in a different accident, and a fake claim had been lodged to seek compensation by falsely implicating the insured vehicle.
Based on the investigation's findings, the SIT filed a chargesheet against Ikrar, Chaman, Rizwan, Manoj Kumar and others. Two main accused in the case, Ikrar s/o Bhure and Rizwan s/o Bhure, had been absconding for the last seven years, but with rigorous efforts and coordination between the SIT and the local police, they were apprehended in Hapur District on 29.07.23. Inspector Waris Siddiqui (SIT) played a pivotal role in this operation, successfully arresting the accused and taking them into police custody.
The insurance company believes that the SIT investigation is paramount in unearthing the truth
behind these fraudulent claims and holding those responsible accountable. ICICI Lombard General Insurance is committed to supporting the investigation in every possible manner and working closely with the authorities to receive justice for the affected policyholders and genuine claimants.
