Hospitals in Sao Paulo on the verge of collapse

Jubilee News Desk

Shocking it may appear but it is in the news. Mayor of Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo, Bruno Covas on Monday said health system could collapse as hospitals are already 90% occupied and with more cases of coronavirus coming up it will be a crisis situation.

As demand is growing for emergency beds to deal with increasing coronavirus cases the crisis is expected. Covas said the city’s public hospitals had reached 90% of their capacity and could run out of space in the next two weeks. What next will happen is the question. Sao Paulo is one of the country’s worst-hit regions, with almost 3,000 deaths so far. And with more cases expected the situation might go out of control in terms of availability of beds for the patients.

The health ministry reported 7,938 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total above 241,000. Only the US, Russia and the UK have higher numbers. On Saturday, Brazil overtook Spain and Italy to become the nation with the fourth largest number of infections.

The death toll in the Latin American nation over 24 hours was 485. The total number of deaths is 16,118 – the world’s fifth-highest figure. Health experts in Brazil have warned that the real number of confirmed infections in the country may be far higher than the official records, because of lack of testing.

Covas said he was now in crisis talks with the state governor over introducing a strict lockdown to try to slow the contagion before hospitals were over crowded. He appealed to the people to stay indoor to stem the spread of the virus. Sao Paulo has a population of about 12 million, and official say majority of residents have been flouting social distancing rules.
