Army Chief Bipin Rawat retired on Tuesday and on his last day of his office, he went to the war memorial at the India Gate to pay respect to the martyrs in New Delhi where he was given farewell with ‘Guard of honor’. General Rawat remembered the brave fallen in war to save the nation and paid his tribute at ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’. While, General Manoj Narvane has been appointed as the new Army Chief.
First Chief of staff
General Rawat is the first army general who got the privilege of being appointed as the first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of India. He may assume his new office tomorrow. General Rawat will be able to play the role of CDS for the next three years as the government has extended the age of retirement to 65 years as per the new rules. He will now be acting as the principle adviser to the defense minister on all the matters relating to defense.

“Today, as I demit the office of the Chief of Army, I wish to convey my gratitude to the soldiers, rank and rifle of Indian Army who have stood steadfast under challenging circumstances,” said General Rawat while talking to ANI, today.
The need for a coordinator between the Tri-forces had been a pending demand ever since the Kargil War. On 15th August, 2019 Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the formation of CDS post from Lal Qila. After a long process of about four months, General Rawat was chosen by the committee for this coveted post.
