Uttar Pradesh is all doomed to pay a heavy price in the absence of any preparedness to manage floods for which the Yogi Government is responsible, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee said on Tuesday.

“Right from Gorakhpur to several other districts are facing flood threats and there is no preparedness on the part of Yogi Government to save the people,” said UPCC chief Mr Ajay Kumar Lallu.

In a statement, Lallu said the State government was non-serious in initiating measures to control floods while several rivers in the state are flowing already above the danger mark.

In all 76 embankments are on the verge of breaking. A number of villages are marooned. Standing crops in thousands of acres of have been destroyed. Animals are also facing extreme hardships. But the government has not yet made any plan. The Standing Committee on Floods had the proposal of Rs 3,000 crore for the Irrigation Department, but only Rs 1,300 crore was approved, said Lallu.

UPCC chief said that most of embankments in the state have got damaged including those in Charsari, Kushinagar and Barabanki, but nothing has been done to repair them. “Crisis of flood is worsening amid corona due to constant rains.

Hundreds of villages in Gorakhpur, Basti, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Bahraich, Gonda, Barabanki, Banaras and Faizabad are marooned. Flood hit people are on the verge of starvation. The government has not yet ensured the distribution of foods among them,” he said.

Giving details Lallu said many embankments on Budhi Gandak, Ghaghra, Saryu and Rapti are in dilapidated condition. Due to floods, Sarsanwa embankment in Barabanki, Aamwa Khaas embankment in Kushinagar and many other embankments are on the verge of collapse. He had demanded the repair of embankments in his assembly segment Tamkuhi Raj, but in vain.

Is the government waiting for massive floods to hit the state? Terming the Yogi Adityanath government as irresponsible, Lallu said that there is a need for funds for repairing embankments, building flood posts, announcing relief package for farmers, but the government is encouraging the people to worship rivers to save themselves from floods, which is ludicrous.

“The Chief Minister is misleading the people. Rivers are indeed like our mothers, but not making efforts to check floods amounts to running away from the responsibilities. Last year hundreds of people lost their lives in floods, but their families have not yet got any compensation so far. The Flood Relief funds were not properly distributed. He urged the state government to take the menace of floods seriously,” he said.

Lallu demanded immediate announcement of flood relief package.
