It’s a changed scenario for the Congress party — contesting on all 401 assembly constituencies in the 2022 UP election.
The party that had contested on over 100 seats in 2017 leaving remaining for the then alliance partner Samajwadi Party, is now going full fledged in the state.
“We are fighting with all our might. It’s the first time in 30 years that our party has fought on all 403 seats. We are raising issues that pertain to the public and issues that are actually hurting the public,” the Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said during election campaigning/ roadshow in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad. Sangeeta Tyagi, wife of late Congress leader Rajiv Tyagi, who died in August 2020 following a cardiac arrest, is Congress candidate from here.
This election Congress’ effort has been to attract more voters with its campaign for women. “Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon” is what Congress has been promulgating with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as its star campaigner.
The previous alliance partner Samajwadi Party is contesting election on all seats alone. Though the two parties share similar views against the ruling BJP.
Congress that had got seven out of the total 114 it contested. The party got 5416540 votes in the election which was 6.25% of the total votes polled. With the party contesting election on all seats the vote share will rise but whether seats won will rise depends only if the candidates secure maximum votes on their individual seats.
Vote share does not depends upon number of candidates and this can be understood with the fact that in 2017 elections a total 1462 independent candidates contested elections from different seats and secured a total 22,29,453 votes which is 2.57% of the votes polled. IN all 86728324 votes were polled in the 2017 UP assembly elections.
There are 14,16,63,646 voters in Uttar Pradesh.
The fight that is being seen between BJP, Samajwadi Party and Congress has extended to the votes that might be shared by Aam Admi Party.
