Keeping with the slogan ‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon’, Congress announced tickets for Uttar Pradesh assembly elections and of the 125 seats it announced tickets for 50 were women candidates, including the Unnao rape victim’s mother from the Unnao assembly seat.
On Thursday Congress leader, AICC general secretary and in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, addressed a press conference virtually and said 40% of the Congress candidates are women and another 40% youth. She called it a ‘new and historic beginning.’
Anti-CAA activist, Sadaf Jafar will be the Congress candidate from the Lucknow central seat. Asha worker and activist Poonam Pandey, who fought for the rights of Asha workers has been fielded from Shahjahanpur and Ram Raj Gond, a tribal leader who fought for the rights of Adivasis in Sonbhadra, has also been given ticket for the elections.
The Congress also fielded PCC president Ajay Kumar Lallu from Tamkuhi Raj seat and Aradhna Misra Mona, the party’s leader in Vidhan Sabha, from Rampur Khas and former union minister Salman Khurshid’s wife Louise Khurshid from Farrukhabad constituency.
Priyanka said the party has fielded such candidates who have struggled for seeking justice in Uttar Pradesh and the party wants them to come to the forefront and be a part of power in the state. Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to have seven-phase polls between February 10 and March 7 and the results will be out on March 10.
The Congress had earlier announced that it will reserve 40% seats for women candidates in the upcoming polls. Vadra has said that the Congress will seek to empower women and urge them to enter politics as it is their right since they comprise 50% of the population.
“I see this as empowering women to ask for their rights and stand up for themselves. It is absolutely their right to participate in politics, as they comprise 50% of the population,” she told press.
