In first such incident, a serving chief medical officer (CMO) in Uttar Pradesh died during treatment for covid late night on January 3.
The CMO, of Balia district Dr Jitendra Pal, had been admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi PGI a few days before. He had to be shifted to ventilator and late in the night his condition worsened further. “His death has shocked us all. The incident is unfortunate,” said Dr Sachin Vaish, president head of the PMSA, the association of government doctors in the state.
At least 14 doctors working in government sector in the state have died during treatment for covid, said the association office bearers. Uttar Pradesh has till now reported 8403 deaths and 588171 cases, the maximum being reported between July and October months.
A popular name, Dr Pal was appointed as CMO early 2019 and prior to it he was working in Kushinagar district as a senior consultant. IN Balia 105 people have died of covid till now.

Doctors across state have expressed condolence over the death. “In India about 800 doctors/medical staff have lost their lives and in Uttar Pradesh over 50 have lost lives due to covid,” said Dr PK Gupta, former president Indian Medical Association, Lucknow.
