Chinese and Korean coronavirus test kits fail trial

News Desk

Lucknow: After India stopped use of Chinese coronavirus testing kits another lot of Chinese and a Korean testing kit failed trials in the country.

Sample kits were tested by the King George’s Medical University in Lucknow and had been provided by importers willing to market them in the country. KGMU has been identified centre of excellence by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for validation of non-FDA approved kits and non-EUA/CE-IVD approved kits.

The two kits that were brought from Korea and China were not found suitable for patient use. Test was conducted by KGMU’s department of microbiology. Once the kits developed in the region pass trial tests and their standards are approved by the KGMU on the basis of guidelines from the ICMR these kits can then be manufactured and used for testing of suspected cases.

KGMU has already been chosen as a Regional Depot for storage and transportation of COVID kits by the ICMR and to supply kits to 14 different Covid Testing Labs located in different parts of Uttar Pradesh. KGMU at present has 25000 kits and some of them have been distributed to AMU, DrRMLIMS already.

A letter declaring KGMU centre of excellence for external quality check by the ICMR came from the additional director general ICMR Dr GS Toteja. KGMU issued press statement about a letter from the ICMR

The kits under trial were tested with the samples of the coronavirus patients admitted at the KGMU. The results were matched with other machines. Kits, gave wrong results after which the team rejected them.
