Car accident, Ukrainian President safe

Special Desk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met a car accident, as a passenger car collided with the presidential vehicle and his escort in the capital Kyiv.

The president was examined by a doctor, no serious injuries were found and is safe, said his spokesman Sergii Nykyforov in a statement.

The driver of the car that collided with the motorcade was also treated at the accident spot and then driven away in an ambulance. Nykyforov said all the circumstances of the traffic accident were being investigated by law enforcement officers.

The accident came a short while after Zelensky, 44, visited the recaptured city of Izyum, a key logistics hub in north-eastern Ukraine Wednesday.

He thanked troops who took part in a swift counter-attack against Russian occupiers, and oversaw a flag-raising ceremony

In recent days, Ukraine’s army has reclaimed swathes of occupied territory, forcing Russian troops to retreat.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Wednesday visited the east Ukraine city of Izyum, one of the largest cities recently recaptured from Russia. Zelensky declared that it was important for the area to be reclaimed by soldiers, who are welcomed by the population. “I see how people meet them, in what a sensitive moment,” he said.

Pictures showed the Ukrainian leader wearing dark-green and flanked by guards as he was taking selfies with soldiers and meeting troops at a flag-rising ceremony. Ukraine has claimed sweeping successes in the northeastern Kharkiv region that borders Russia in recent days and also claims to have clawed back territory along a southern front near the Kherson region on the Black Sea.
