BJP wins Azamgarh and Rampur by polls

Lok Sabha seats in both the Samajwadi Party strongholds in UP’s Rampur and Azamgarh have been won by BJP, elections results declared on Sunday stated. Ghyanshyam Lodhi won in Rampur and and Dinesh Lal Yadav in Azamgarh.
Among other by polls BJP won two seats in Tripura — Town Bardowali and Jubrahnagar– while Congress won Agartala. AAP has won the Rajinder Nagar bypoll but lost Punjab’s Sangrur. Congress’s Shilpi Neha Tirkey won Jharkhand’s Mandar assembly seat.

“The double engine government has got double victory in the state,” said Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, addressing a press conference on Sunday after the results were announced.

There was 49.43% polling in Azamgarh, and 41.39% in Rampur. Over 35 lakh people were eligible to vote in the bypolls in these two constituencies to decide the fate of a total 19 candidates.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted and alleged irregularities during filing of nominations and polling day. Both these Lok Sabha seats were seen as a bastion of Samajwadi Party. Rampur, which fell vacant following resignation of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. BSP did not contect Rampur seat.

Azamgarh, was earlier represented by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. The Samajwadi Party had also alleged irregularities in both constituencies during elections.

Giving his reaction upon election results, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said the Lok Sabha by-election results of Rampur and Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday clearly show that the Samajwadi Party (SP) can not defeat BJP.In Rampur, the BJP fielded Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi, who recently joined the party. Asim Raja, handpicked by Azam Khan was SP candidate. The Azamgarh seat has triangular contest among BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’, a Bhojpuri actor-singer, SP’s Dharmendra Yadav and BSP’s Shah Alam, also known as Guddu Jamali.

Of the 18.38 lakh voters in Azamgarh, 9,70,249 are men, 8,67,942 women and 36 belong to the third gender category. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Azam Khan bagged 5,59,177 votes. BJP candidate Jaya Prada got 4,49,180 votes and Congress candidate Sanjay Kapoor lost his deposit in Rampur.
All five assembly segments–Azamgarh, Mubarakpur, Sagdi, Gopalpur and Mehnagar–falling in Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency were won by the SP in the recent state elections.
In Azamgarh, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there was an alliance between the SP and the BSP, and Akhilesh Yadav won easily, getting 6.21 lakh votes against BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’, who got 3.61 lakh votes.
