Uttar Pradesh assembly election has two bigwigs; with diverse focus — for a common goal. The BJP and Samajwadi Party have a common goal with diverse focus. While BJP has to retain its full majority government the Samajwadi Party has its focus to regain a full majority government that it lost in the last election.
The former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has been travelling across state for the past six months, unlike 2017 when he spent last six-months before elections in Lucknow mostly. His ground work has made him smile with confidence.
Uttar Pradesh has 15,02,84,005 voters. Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Punjab and Goa have been announced and Uttar Pradesh has maximum 403 assembly seats. Both the BJP and SP are defending a key turf.’
Of the BJP’s 301 Lok Sabha seats, 62 which is 20%, comes from Uttar Pradesh. The BJP and the Congress are not facing each other, however, Samajwadi Party is drawing crowds in Uttar Pradesh, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also attempting formally in the assembly polls for the first time with already 150 tickets to candidates distributed. Not surprisingly the Congress too wants to get a foothold in Uttar Pradesh again and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been campaigning since past few months with focus upon youth and women electorates.
If the BJP wins Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath will be projected as the prospective successor to Modi by a group of his followers. His brand campaign in recent months puts the spotlight on him as a Hindu leader who is turning around India’s biggest state. In the Congress party, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is in charge of its Uttar Pradesh strategy and party’s performance will reflect on her leadership skills. SP in Uttar Pradesh is trying to find place amid backward politics led by a dominant caste.
Not to forget the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) that had a full majority government in Uttar Pradesh before SP. BSP, has been in power in Uttar Pradesh several times in the past, appears to be pretty silent at present. But the party has a dedicated core vote bank that it can bank upon in any given situation.
At present the election commission has banned all political rallies and gatherings till January 23. Post the ban parties might be seen campaigning rigorously with BJP bigwigs such as Amit Shah planning to campaign in Uttar Pradesh extensively.
