Bangladesh Fears Indian Law

Bangladesh Government, fearing the return of its Muslim refugees from India had snapped mobile services along the Indo-Bangla border Citing security reason hitting around 10 million subscribers of the border area. Sources say Sheikh Hasina government move was prompted by the fear that Muslim refugees living in India might return to Bangladesh.

Indian Government had made a new law Citizenship Amendment Act through which it will provide Citizenship to persecuted Hindu minorities not the Muslims of Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan in India who had taken shelter before December 2014. The new Law has created big hue and cry in different parts of our country. Bangladesh is the first neighboring country that fears the return of Muslim refugees due to new Act. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) had ordered service provides Grameenphone, Teletalk, Robi and Banglalink to snap network coverage in the border areas till further orders for the sake of the country’s security in current circumstances.

A report from Bangladesh says that at least 350 people had been arrested as they entered western border district of Jhenidah from West Bengal. They were mostly Bangladeshi Muslims who went to India illegally. Govt fears that more Muslims may be prompted to enter Bangladesh. India and Bangladesh share nearly 4,100 km of border, which is the longest land boundary that India shares with any of its neighbors. Around 10 million mobile users in 32 districts of Bangladesh along the Indian border are affected with the curb of using mobile phones.
