The Modi government has given nod to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (amendment) bill 2020 and with this the way to make changes in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy act 1971 is clear. The boll will be tabled in the parliament in the coming session. The bill speaks about medical abortion in 24thweek.

A PIL was filed in the court regarding sanction to medical termination of pregnancy in later weeks. During the hearing the health ministry had in August 2019 informed the court that the ministry has started discussion over extending the permission limit for medical termination of pregnancy from 20 weeks to 24 weeks. The government in the court had said after due advises the final shape will be given to changes in the act. And then it will be sent to law ministry for amendment.

Health ministry also told the court that the ministry had sent the documents regarding medical termination of pregnancy law 1972 to the law ministry. Later the law ministry informed the health ministry that after formation of new government the matter shall be taken up.
