FPA India, Lucknow Branch has launched a month-long vocational training programme for 30 underprivileged women and young girls, aimed at empowering them with skills in jute-based handicrafts and beautician services. Organised in collaboration with Mahila Shilp Shikshalay—an institute supported by Social Work Department —the initiative supports India’s national campaign on the 16 Days of Gender Activism.

The programme focuses on building skills that can help women generate sustainable income, gain financial independence, and strengthen family livelihoods. Economic participation is also linked to reduced vulnerability to gender-based violence and exploitation, as women who earn have greater freedom, decision-making power, and social mobility. In the context of Uttar Pradesh, women’s labour force participation has shown improvement in recent years, yet still remains low in many districts, making such efforts crucial for bridging persistent economic gaps. Lucknow has been highlighted among the better-performing districts for women’s economic empowerment, but a large share of women—especially from low-income households—remain outside formal or stable employment.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Kirti Sharma, Principal of Mahila Shilp Shikshalay, said that the collaboration will help women gain confidence along with livelihood skills, enabling them to use traditional crafts for modern income opportunities. Dr. Manjula Mehta, Chairperson of FPA India Lucknow, highlighted that economic empowerment is a key tool for preventing gender-based violence and that such programmes help women reclaim agency over their lives.
Rahul Dwivedi, Branch Manager of FPA India Lucknow, affirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting gender equality through skilling, awareness, and community engagement. The initiative is expected not only to provide immediate vocational skills but also connect women with markets and income-generation platforms, contributing to poverty reduction and long-term socio-economic development.
