The holding of timely election is the essence of maintaining democratic governance, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said in the press conference announcing the elections. The Commission said it had decided to go ahead with the polls after detailed discussions with the Union Health and Home Secretaries, experts, and health officials of the concerned states.

In December 2021 a full bench of the Election Commission of India has reached Uttar Pradesh on a three-day visit to Lucknow to discuss preparations and possibilities for conducting polls.

The tenure of Uttar Pradesh vidhan sabha is getting over on May 14. Hence elections and formation of new government before the day becomes significant. By March 10 results will be out for 403 assembly constituencies.

Voting hours in all states have been extended by an hour and over 30,000 new booths will be set up to ensure social distancing.
