A massive rescue operation has been launched in Florida, after a multi-storied residential building partially collapsed on Thursday.

At least one person has died, several are injured. Surfside Mayor Charles W Burkett said that there is at least one fatality from the collapse in Surfside, Florida.

The person was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The person who died was a woman, and a boy of about 10 years of age was pulled out alive from the rubble.

A major search and rescue operation is still ongoing for survivors feared trapped inside a partially collapsed 12-storeyed building in Miami-Dade County, according to reports. “This is a horrific catastrophe. In the United States, buildings just don’t fall down,” Burkett said to the news person.

Miami-Dade county mayor Daniella Levine Cava wrote in a tweet, “My prayers are with all those impacted by this horrific tragedy and with their families.

We are so grateful to @MiamiDadeFire, @MiamiBeachFire and all the first responders on the scene – may they stay safe while working to save lives.”

Resident Kimberly Morales who lives in the building across the street said she told everyone to hurry up and leave the building. Rescuers are combing through the rubble, searching for survivors, and were seen pulling a boy out alive.

The collapse is said to have occurred at around 06 GMT. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said they had sent 80 vehicles to the scene. Police are also assisting with the rescue operation.
