North India grips in severe cold wave, 28 dead so far in UP only

 

New Delhi, Dec 28

As Cold waves gripped most parts of the Northern states, 28 deaths have been reported only from Uttar Pradesh. Though the weather department predicted Sunday to be the coldest day but Saturday itself has become the coldest day so far in this winter season.

Aligarh has been recorded as the coldest of all cities in Uttar Pradseh with 3.6 degree Celsius and a maximum of 11.2. While, the Capital Lucknow recorded a minimum of 7.7 degree Celsius and maximum of 14.4 degrees Celsius.

 

Airport authorites in Delhi reported that a total of 760 Fligts has been delayed due to poor visibility after which 19 were cancelled. Railway authorities informed that over a 100 trains remained behind schedule due to zero visibility.

However, Kanpur has reported 10 deaths so far, four each in Mahoba, Varanasi, Shravasti , Banda and one each in Mainpuri and Lucknow. Bundelkhand and Madhya Pradesh alone recorded 17 deaths so far.

Government has made several ‘Ran Basera’s’ across Uttar Pradesh with all the facilities like blankets and bonfire for the homeless. Northern states of the country has been witnessing some record breaking weather in this year. According to the Metrological Department at 8:30 am on Saturday at Safdarganj Enclave was at 2.4 degree Celsius, Palam at 3.1 degree Celsius and Lodhi Road at 1.9 degree Celsius.

Snowfall coming in far from north

Places with higher altitude in the Himalyan region, Lahul-Spiti has been experiencing 5 cm snowfall followed by Gandhola witnessed 3 cm and Kinnaur’s Kalpa recorded 1 cm. While, the coldest place recorded was Keylong where the mercury settled at a minus 6 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperature in Kalpa was 0.7 degrees Celsius.

 

Tourist destinations getting colder

Famous tourist places in the Himachal Pradesh like, Manali recorded a low 2 degrees Celsius followed by Kufri at 4 degrees Celsius , Dalhousie at 4.3 degrees Celsius and Shimla at 6.3 degree Celsius.

On Friday, moderate snowfall has been recorded from up north, in most parts of Kashmir. While, 12 flights have been canceled from Srinagar airport due to bad weather conditions.

The famous Dal lake in Srinagar was seen frozen on the surface after temperature dipped in the region at minus 5.6 degree Celsius. Dal Lake, a famous spot attracts a large number of visitors every year.
