UP’s indigenous industries need support

News Desk

During lockdown migrant workers were seen coming back from their place of work to their villages and despite facing difficulties they were adamant to reach home. Reason. They didn’t had work to sustain life outside their village.

The economy has been hit with coronavirus cases going up and industries are getting the jerk. IN Uttar Pradesh there are ten identical industries that have been facing tough time ever since the lockdown began. Reason is similar to what industries at national level face. With no work the workers left and with no sale the income went down.

From Lucknow to Firozbad, from Chikankari to Glasswork all have been hit hard. And with workers looking for options these trades might continue to get the jerk. IN Uttar Pradesh the industries that have made their name are glasswork of Firozabad, chikankari in Lucknow, leather industry in Kanpur, shoes in Agra, spices from Meerut, and few more to name. Agra that has reported maximum over 750 coronavirus cases might have to wait for longer to get relaxation in lockdown. A collective loss of these industries will be in crores.

The situation has reached such an extent that despite lockdown nearing opening the owners are fearing they might take year to stand again as profitable industries. They too need support of the state government.

In Meerut

The spice industry in Meerut is awaiting lockdown to open. The exporters of spices in Meerut have business till Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, and the current situation is the finished product is dumped in godowns awaiting permission for business and exports.

The bats of Meerut are also ready to hit the cricket ground but due to lockdown its also remains in shops awaiting for events such as IPL that has demand from Meerut maximum. Thousands of workers in Meerut sports industry have no savings left.

Kanpur leather industry dumped

The city’s leather products are used across the globe – jackets, wallets, belts, shoes and what else. Due to lockdown the ports are closed and so are airports. So there is no expert from the city very close to the state capital. The goods are made and dumped in godowns. Estimates say RS 25000 crore loss has been incurred.

Lucknow’s chikankari

Lucknow’s chikankari industry is standing at a position where nothing moves ahead. As majority workers engaged in this industry are from old city areas where the hotspots are made or in rural pockets from where they can not come to employers hence not even goods are made to dump in stores.

Export and sale shall only be an option when lockdown opens and international flights and movement of ships is allowed both by India and countries where goods are to be exported. Approximately 20000 workers engaged in this work are having nothing. The loss is estimated at about Rs 500 crore.

Firozbad industry

The glass industry in Firozabad is not exception. According to estimates the loss is nearly about Rs 80 crore. All factories are closed hence the workers are not paid anyting.

Kannauj Attar, is nowhere

The world famous Attar of Kannauj is nowhere to spread its fragrance nowdays. Its stock too is piled up inside stores. Made from flowers this industry is watching everyday thousands of flowers being dumped in fields and the workers engaged in the industry having no work to do.

Carpet industry in Bhadohi and shoes in Agra

Both the carpet and shoe industries in Bhadohi and Agra are under tremendous pressure as workers are having no work. In Agra that has reported maximum over 750 coronavirus cases is at high alert as even after lockdown is lifted in state the city may still have to live with restrictions.

The carpet industry had suffered a loss of Rs 12000 crore last year and this year it is at stand still. The Agra model had become famous but as cases rise the industry is in shock.

The brass has gone dull

The brass industry in Moradabad has dampened the glow of brass utensils and it is estimated Rs 3000 crore loss has come up. Exports is stopped and sale to domestic market too. Uttar Pradesh has till now reported 3267 cases.
