Pakistan court order’s death sentence to Junaid Hafeez in blasphemy case after Musharraf

 

New Delhi: A Pakistani former Lecturer Junaid Hafeez is second  in line for death penalty after the news broke of Parveez Musharraf on Sunday.

On Saturday, 33 year old former lecturer was sentenced for death in a case of blasphemy. Hafeez, an academic at Multan’s Bahuddin Zakariya University (BZU) taught English until 2013. He graduated from the BZU in English literature before moving to US  on a Fulbright scholarship to complete a masters degree in the same. He later started working at as the English lecturer and often invited women’s rights activists for the guest lectures that he would organize.

Qaisra Shahraz, an acclaimed television writer is also accused of passing blasphemous remarks at the such an event after which both Hafeez and Shahraz were imprisoned, while Shireen Zubair the head of the lecturer department moved out of  Pakistan.

Hafeez were spent six years of while in solitary confinement after 2013, in which atleast seven judges were transferred. His trial proceedings were transferred to Multan Central Jail for security reasons in 2014, after Hafeez’s lawyer was shot dead in May.
