Why UNHRC moved Supreme Court

The UN has now reached the supreme court against the CAA and its Human Rights Commission has filed an appealed with the supreme court for intervention.

UN human rights chief has filed an intervention application in the Supreme Court of India against the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This means the global human rights body wants to be a party in the existing pleas filed against the CAA. India has said that no foreign institution or individual has any locus standi on internal matters of a sovereign country.

Ministry of External affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva was informed on Monday evening that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has filed “an intervention application” in the apex court in connection to the CAA.

This is not the first time that voice has been raised against the citizenship law. Earlier too countries have raised voices on this. Several statements have been issued by commissions in the US. They are keeping a watch upon the situation. There are several protests going on in India.

In Delhi there was violence in connection with the CAA and in three days of violence 45 people lost their lives.
