Daler Mehndi arrested for ‘kabootarbaji’

Singer Daler Mehndi, who is known both for his Punjabi party songs and Bollywood numbers, could not get relief in 2003 human trafficking case from a Patiala court Thursday.

Complainants had alleged that Mehndi brothers had taken passage money from them to help them illegally migrate to other countries. The court dismissed the appeal filed by the singer against his two-year jail sentence hence Mehndi, who was present in the court, was arrested by the Punjab police.

The immigration fraud, is also called ‘kabootarbaazi’ which means flying pigeons. This abbreviation connects to numerous youth in Punjab trying to use illegal means to get settled abroad.

A case was registered against him in 2003 and after 15 years in 2018, the lower court sentenced him to two-years imprisonment, which has now been upheld by the sessions court as well.

The singer Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh were accused of illegally sending people abroad disguised as members of his singing troupe and charged hefty money for the same. In 2018, the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class had held both the brothers guilty and had sentenced them to two years in jail. They filed an appeal in the sessions court.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge HS Grewal dismissed his bail plea, following which he was taken into custody. The FIR registered in 2003 at Sadar police station, mentioned that the brothers had taken two troupes in 1998 and 1999, in which 10 people were taken to the US and were dropped off abroad illegally.

The complaint against the singers was filed by Bakshish Singh while 35 more complaints came up levelling charges of fraud against them. The complainants had alleged that the brothers had taken money from them to help them migrate to the US illegally, but had failed.

Daler Mehndi, as per the rules, has the option to go High Court and the Supreme Court.
